Pottawatomie County Schedules Work Sessions on Solar Moratorium and Facility Study

Pottawatomie County Commissioners have scheduled upcoming work sessions to address solar energy development in the county, including a discussion on the current moratorium and a presentation of a facility study.

During Monday's meeting, commissioners confirmed that a solar work session will be held next Monday to discuss the county's existing moratorium on solar projects. This session will allow commissioners to review current solar energy policies and consider any potential updates.

"We're discussing the moratorium," County Administrator explained when clarifying the purpose of the upcoming session.

In addition to the solar moratorium discussion, commissioners announced that a separate facility study work session has been scheduled for November 24.

During this session, representatives will present their current findings, though it was noted that they may not yet have specific numerical recommendations ready at that time.

The county's interest in energy discussions was further highlighted when Commissioner Page mentioned a recent contact from someone he met at an Energy Conference. The individual has requested to speak with the commission about energy issues affecting Pottawatomie County.

"I think it is time that we educate ourselves about all the options that are out there that weren't even there three years ago," Commissioner Page stated during the meeting. He specifically referenced emerging technologies like restorative batteries that can store energy when not needed and release it when demand increases.

Commissioner Page emphasized that the purpose of these discussions is educational, noting, "I just want for education, get that dialog open and about all the options so that we can do appropriate things for the county."

Another commissioner added that while they're open to learning about various energy options, there are capacity concerns within the Southwest Power Pool that must be considered when evaluating future energy needs.

The upcoming work sessions represent part of the commission's ongoing efforts to stay informed about evolving energy technologies and policies as they relate to Pottawatomie County.
